Overview

Liver Transplant is a life‐saving surgical procedure in which a failing or diseased liver is replaced with a healthy donor liver. It is the definitive treatment for end‐stage liver disease caused by cirrhosis, acute liver failure, or certain metabolic disorders.

Our multidisciplinary transplant team offers advanced Orthotopic and Living Donor Liver Transplant procedures — ensuring meticulous donor matching, state‐of‐the‐art surgical technique, and comprehensive postoperative care to maximize survival and quality of life.

When Do You Need Liver Transplant?

You may be a candidate if you're experiencing:

  • End‐stage liver disease (decompensated cirrhosis) with complications like ascites, variceal bleeding, or hepatic encephalopathy
  • Acute liver failure with rapidly worsening liver function
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma within established transplant criteria
  • Metabolic liver disorders (e.g., Wilson’s disease, primary biliary cholangitis) unresponsive to medical therapy
  • Recurrent biliary atresia or primary sclerosing cholangitis requiring definitive management

Types of Liver Transplant

  • Orthotopic Liver Transplant : Removal of the recipient’s native liver and replacement with a whole cadaveric donor liver in the same anatomical position.
  • Living Donor Liver Transplant : Transplantation of a liver segment from a healthy living donor, allowing regeneration in both donor and recipient.
  • Split Liver Transplant : Division of a deceased donor liver into two grafts for transplantation into two recipients (usually an adult and a child).
  • Auxiliary Liver Transplant : Implantation of a partial donor liver alongside the native liver, used in select acute liver failure cases.

Recovery Timeline

  • Hospital Stay : 10–14 days, including ICU care and step‐down monitoring.
  • First Steps : Early mobilization and breathing exercises within 24–48 hours post‐op.
  • Medications & Monitoring : Lifelong immunosuppressants, routine liver function tests, imaging, and biopsies as needed.
  • Return to Light Activities : 4–6 weeks of gentle walking and gradual activity increase.
  • Return to Work : 3–6 months, depending on job demands and overall recovery.
  • Full Recovery : Approximately 12 months for complete functional restoration and conditioning.
